For several years now I’ve been operating a resort employment site which to this day required extensive updating with new job opportunities.
Since I hate hard work, I was always trying to tweak it with or without a plugin to automate the job posting. One thing I couldn’t implement was a resume upload section. My prior setup was a form in which a user would fill in the form and I would later post it on the website. Boy talk about work. There is so much to do when you make your living off the internet that posting resumes by hand is not one of them!
After searching for a plugin that would automate the process of posting jobs by employers themselves as well as candidates being able to upload their resumes, I came across a couple.
I decided on a WordPress’s plugin called WPCareers by Mohammad Forgani that can be found at the WordPress Plugin Directory.
The installation is pretty straight forward when you upload for your admin back end. If you install the plugin with your existing theme, you might have a display problem. The author of the plugin warns of such effect, and actually proposes a theme which is specifically designed for WPCareers. It’s a nice theme but not for what I wanted to do with it.
For the job site I was using a theme called Prosumer by author Jauhari. I was fitting for my website, but when I activated WPCareers and went on the job portal page, my theme was all out of wack. Since I needed to keep the same theme it was obvious to me that I needed to modify the theme to accommodate WPCareers.
For those who are in the same situation, let me save you time and frustration.
Here’s what you need to do (the easy way).
1. Open Notepad or whatever editor you wish and copy and paste the following code:
|
IMPORTANT: Change the value in the 950px to whatever you themes width is.
2. Now save the file as no-sidebar.php and upload it within your theme at the same place you will find page.php and single.php etc.
3. In your admin area and go to page edit. Open the page titled [[wpcareers]] page and on the right where you see template with a dropdown menu, select “No-Sidebar”.
You now have a fully functional job board working inside your present them.
Getting back to the review, WPCareers is quite customizable if you know a little about php coding. Otherwise if you have limited knowledge of php coding, take may word don’t attempt it. It’s really not worth the time of finding the errors.
WPCareers does what it’s meant to do, automatically manage job and resume postings. As for charging for job postings, WPCareers has a built in default of making postings free. I think it’s a problem that can be overcome by re-directing to your PayPal account.
A big disappointment with WPCareers is the lack of support. Unfortunately I have left a comment about issues but have still to get a response.
The issues I have encountered with WPCareers are on the register page. The confirmation code didn’t show up. After installing another copy on another computer, I noticed I had a duplicate folder in wp-content/plugins/wpcareers//cache/cache which normally has one.
The other issue which I’m working on still is the fact that as soon as someone fills out all the information and uploading a resume, I receive an email saying that a new resume has been posted and that it needs to be approved. The problem is that when I get to the admin area and check to approve posting, there’s no new posting. I works fine with the jobs posting.
Other that those 2 issues I have encountered which are probably caused by my tweaking of WPCareers. If you’re running anything having to do with human resources, head hunting, or simply to post jobs you have then WPCareers is the right tool. It’s a complete job and resume posting software ready to go once installed without have to recode.
Other than for the lack of support, WPCareers will make you look quite professional right out of the box.
